The Most Gracious. The teacher of the Quran. (55:1-2). A study of the word “ علَّمَ ” ('allama, taught, teacher) will show that it is found 22 times in the Quran in the above tense, that is, in the perfect active verb form (known as the fa’ala form among Arab grammarians). However, in 3 of the 22 occurrences, the word refers to human beings teaching others or training animals. The other 19 instances refer to God teaching man directly or through the instrumentality of angels. The 19 instances of God as teacher are:

The three instances where the word ‘allama refers to man’s teaching are: 5:4 (at the earlier part of the verse); 20:71; and 26: 49. In terms of the occurrences of the words Rahman, 'allama (referring to God as teaching), and “Quran” in the Quran, first two verses of chapter 55 reveal the following symmetry: 57 ----- 19 ----- 57 As is well known, the number 19 is the abjad value of the Arabic word wahid (One)—and the main theme of the Quran is that God (Allah) is One. |
