Subject: [Masjid Tucson] Submission weekly reminder In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful Peace be upon you, [Quran 90:12-13] Which one is the difficult path? The freeing of slaves. June 19th in the USA is a day set aside to commemorate the end of slavery in the country. While slavery is unacceptable in modern societies, it was not always so. Over fourteen centuries ago, God taught the believers in the Quran that they should work towards freeing of slaves (Quran 90:12-13) as difficult as it may be. Freeing of slaves was also encouraged as an act of righteousness (Quran 2:177, 9:60) and to atone for sins (Quran 4:92, 5:89, 58:3). Even when slavery does not exist, the general principle of not taking advantage of the weak and speaking up against oppression is encouraged by God. May we be thankful to God for our freedoms, and may God help us not to ever fall into the role of oppressors.
